Trace Metals in Compost (pre-sorting) - Investigates benefits of pretreatment and feedstock manipulation on compost quality.

Compost Free Airspace - Optimization study on Gore composting system to minimize the woodchip requirement and/or decrease the specific reactor volume.

Novel Time Temperature Probes for Compost System - Innovative probes are being developed that can withstand the rigors of composting while simulating the fate of individual particles as they go through composting processes, providing critical data about the temperatures experienced from a particle’s perspective.

Impact of Pretreatment on Compost Quality:  Focus on Trace Metals - Phase III of this research project determined the rates and mechanisms of transfer of metals from municipal sources such as batteries and scrap metal into the final compost.

Pathway of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Generation in Compost - CO production was studied in the enclosed co-composting facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. Practical strategies were developed to limit CO emissions to safe levels.

Composting Infected Tree Waste - The EWMCE evaluated protocols for composting diseased tree waste to prevent the spread of fungal pathogens.

Municipal Compost Upgrading - The EWMCE completed an evaluation of methods to separate glass and plastics from compost.

Contact Time and Human Pathogen Inactivation - This study will examine the actual temperature conditions experienced over time by represetantive particles of compost in full-scale composting systems, and will measure the effects on a variety of human pathogens and indicator organisms.

Drywall Waste Management - The housing construction industry in Alberta currently generates one third of Alberta's waste. This multidisciplinary study has developed best management practices for handling drywall waste, and has produced a software tool for designers that optimizes material use and prevents waste.

Using of Compost and Biochar in Green Roof Covers - The research team for this project is conducting an experimental trial to assess the potential of compost and biochar as lightweight materials in mixtures for green roof covers.
