“At-the-Centre” technical seminars run monthly throughout the fall and winter. Designed to showcase the latest developments in waste management practice, research and technology, the seminars are chosen for their relevance to a wide waste management audience. Seminar attendees range from professionals and practitioners to researchers and students, and from technicians and engineers to managers, consultants, and policy makers.

Use of Algae in Wastewater Processing- 1/2 Day Seminar

The use of algae to treat municipal, industrial, and agricultural wastewater is not new. However this technology has attracted a good deal of recent interest since such systems have the potential to generate carbon credits by taking up carbon dioxide, and by using the algae to produce ‘green’ fuels such as bio-diesel. Municipal wastewater streams are rich in nutrients and might appear to be an excellent candidate for this technology. However this advantage might be trumped by other factors such as climate and land area requirements. This seminar will provide an overview of the factors that need to be taken into consideration in evaluating this technology, recent trends and developments in this interesting field, and details of contributions to our knowledge of this area by local researchers.
