Message from the Executive Manager
Jerry Leonard
With Waste-The Social Context '08 just over a week away, a good deal of our energy is directed towards creating a stimulating and memorable experience for all delegates. We are confident that the confernce will be a great success, but the other activities of the Centre continue, regardless! New research and technology development projects continue to be initiated and our wastewater operator training program continues to develop.
If imitation is a measure of success, we must be doing something right as, over the past few weeks, I have been involved in three conversations with people interested in developing similar centres to ours in different places. Such developments could be seen as competition, but I choose to see them as opportunities for collaboration that eventually could lead to an extremely powerful consortium of facilities and expertise that would be truly world-beating. We have a good thing going, but we will always welcome opportunities to develop and improve.
Regards,

Dr. Jerry Leonard

Project Update

Composting of Infected Tree Waste

Anificant ount A significant amount of diseased tree waste from City of Edmonton parks and boulevards is landfilled every year. A preferred way to manage this material would be to compost it, but protocols need to be established to guarantee any pathogens are inactivated by the composting process. This project is aimed at establishing such protocols and the first phase is to carry out a comprehensive literature search for information from any previous work.

Merlin Plastics Advisory Services

Merlin Plastics has received a grant, under the Alberta Innovation program through Alberta Environment, to develop a gasification process to handle waste label material from its PET bottle recycling operation in Calgary. The EWMCE has been contracted by Alberta Environment to set up an advisory panel that will provide technical input and oversight to the Merlin project.
