Message from the Executive Manager
Jerry LeonardI am delighted to announce that at its meeting on June 25th, the EWMCE's Board of Directors approved the Centre membership of EPCOR Water Services, a major provider of water supply and wastewater treatment services. A future edition of this newsletter will include more details about EPCOR, but suffice it to say that, as operators of several wastewater treatment plants, they are an excellent fit with the Centre's mandate and activities. EPCOR will be represented on the Board by Mr Jim Oosterbaan, while Mr Lee Jenkins will represent them on our Management Committee. The Centre has already worked with EPCOR in the area of biosolids management, and the stage seems set for a long and mutually beneficial association.

The Board meeting was also a time for change and renewal in Board membership, and I would like to express my thanks to Dr Gary Kachanoski from the University of Alberta (who has chaired the Board since its inception), Mr Gary Webster from Newalta, and Ms Mary Rehill from NAIT, for their invaluable service over the past few years. Welcome to Dr Bill Dushenko as Ms Rehill's replacement on the Board from NAIT!

Regards,

Dr. Jerry Leonard, P.Eng., Executive Manager

Project Updates
  • The Centre of Excellence is preparing to test onsite wastewater systems for a number of companies. Wastewater generated at oilfield work camps is generally transported to centralized treatment plants, but new regulations require companies to treat the wastewater onsite. The first step in the testing process is developing parameters for synthetic wastewater, which will mimic the wastewater generated by work camps. Because work camp wastewater has a higher contaminant load than municipal wastewater, Michelle Aunger, the Centre's summer lab technician, has been adding various contaminants to samples of Edmonton's wastewater in order to develop the parameters.
